CIMO is active in contributing for the implementation of international research agendas and promotion of initiatives on sustainable development in mountain areas (e.g., "Mountains for Europe’s Future: A Strategic Research Agenda", CH-AT Aliance, and "Future Earth Strategic Research Agenda", International Council for Science).

CIMO's strategy is in tune with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Societal Challenges of Horizon 2020, the Strategic Initiative on Mountain and Climate Change, the National/Regional Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation, and the "Bragança Declaration".
