Environmental issues in general have been putting great pressure on the world business sector for last decades. Industries have been forced to implement cleaner technologies in their productive processes and to choose less toxic raw materials in order to contribute to a more sustainable environment. As well as environmental considerations, public opinion and individual norms and values have also changed, and society’s expectations and the demands it makes to industries are now higher than before. This issue is particularly sensitive in the agro-food sector due to the high concerns about food safety and the growing demand for organic products.
A new approach more directly associated with protection of the environment is now emerging and challenges the sector to behave in a socially responsible way and to pay considerably more attention to law requirements and interests of various stakeholders.
The ECODEEP project - eco-efficiency and environmental management in the agro-food sector- aims at establishing a platform to support the implementation of a set of tools for analysis of production systems of the agro-food sector, in particular dairy, wine, olive oil, meat, fish and fruit/vegetables sectors, contributing to increase their competitiveness and enhancing their innovative capacity.
The project’s methodology involves, in a first step, the development of environmental surveys in which inputs and outputs of mass and energy in a set of selected agro-food systems will be quantified and a second phase of analyses and development of eco-efficiency tools, based on a LCA approach.
The project will be developed by a consortium of five partners (IPC - coordinator, IPCB, UA, ADAI and IPB).
