Innovation of CIMO research recognized at the 2018 Food & Nutrition Awards

The research project HoneyOrigin received an honorable mention at the “Projects of the Future” Food & Nutrition Awards in the category of Research and Innovation. This recognition was delivered during the 2018 Food & Nutrition Annual Conference that took place in Lisbon on October 16.
The HoneyOrigin project developed innovative processes of authentication of honey and its botanical and geographical origin based on molecular markers. Under this research project there are already available protocols for authentication of monofloral honey from lavender (Lavandula stoechas, L. penduculata and L. viridis), honeys from European (Apis mellifera) and Asian (A. cerana) honeybee species, as well as honey from A. mellifera iberiensis (A-lineage), the subespecies found in Portugal. HoneyOrigin results from collaborative research between the LAQV-REQUIMTE/FFUP laboratories at the University of Porto and the Mountain Research Centre (CIMO) at IPB. Joana Amaral and Maria Alice Pinto are the CIMO researchers responsible for this project.
