An overview of the main results obtained during a three year research project conducted in the studied area highlights a wide range of wild and cultivated flora, as well as a great diversity of natural and semi-natural habitats and humanized landscapes which are repositories of natural life and cultural heritage. Moreover, shows that local people is highly interested in promoting local knowledge and rural development, taking part in many of the activities already organized.
Based on previous fieldwork, a reference collection and a database of well known and widely used species from Terra de Miranda have been set up. This collection is the starting point of the future Herbarium of the Ecomuseum which will be available to visitors and will support upcoming activities. The EDP fund supports promotional activities and awareness campaigns, environmental education sessions, cultural programs, and thematic exhibitions involving national and international participants from different age groups, gender and level of education.
Seeds from old, forgotten and unusual crops have been gathered in homegardens and arable fields or provided by local people and farmers. These materials were sampled, labelled, described and send to the Portuguese Seed Bank in Braga. Some duplicates of several species were kept at the Ecomuseum to be shared with visitors and local partners and to be cultivated in plots from the FRAUGA Association aiming at preserving and promoting old crops and practices with cultural relevance.
Several promotional products will be prepared, such as flyers, leaflets, posters, rollups, outdoors displays, bookmarks and postcards. These materials will report different issues concerning species, crops, uses and local practices according to each season and the rural calendar and will be widely distributed.
The main objectives match the philosophy and fulfil the purposes of the Ecomuseum. Therefore all activities will successfully contribute to the Ecomuseum development and accreditation.
